It would be unfair to them and their fans to suggest they weren't well-known prior to, but, for those who didn't know them, we've at least mentioned them here. Some, like Seth Green and Jane Lynch, had been acting for quite a while before they appeared on The X-Files.
There are some stars who were cut out of the list because they were in a grey area that we would like to mention. We could go through and list every famous actor from then and now that ever appeared on The X-Files, but it might be more interesting to look at the stars who weren't famous or well-known at the time of their appearance, actors who have since become major stars in film and TV. While not all got famous from their role in The X-Files (most did not), some were noticed because of their performances and some partnerships formed during filming that would come into play again later on down the road.
Going back and watching episodes nowadays, however, reveals that there were a great number of now-famous actors who took roles in the show at a time when they were virtual unknowns. Some came because they loved the show, others because they were connected to cast members or the crew in some way, like Tea Leoni, for example, who was married to Duchovny at the time. While the stars, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, became household names for many people, there were a surprising number of stars who showed up here and there throughout the show's run.
Amassing nine seasons with a total of 202 episodes, The X-Files was one of TV's most popular shows of the 1990s.
